Countries Open to American Tourists and Their Requirements for Travel

The following countries are open to American tourists with the below restrictions as of the publication of this article 1/9/2020. The decision to travel is ultimately your own, and your responsibility alone. There can be increased risks to your health by traveling internationally during COVID-19. The information in this article might not be up to date within hours of publication. Always verify with local authorities of your country, and the country you wish to travel, or the embassies in order to have the most up to date information.

Whether you want to know just to keep up with what the world is doing with COVID, or you’re interested in traveling soon because jungle fever is real…the below countries are open to travel. There are requirements for entry and those requirements are different for every country so keep that in mind as you think about future travel. The typical entry requirements for entry still apply, so if the country requires a visa upon entry it is still something you need to obtain. The links are for the corresponding Embassy sites, and some countries share one or don’t have one within their own country so the most relevant ones are linked. The information gathered below is accurate as of the publication of this article, and in the travel world, things can change even by the hour, so this resource is more to give you an idea of what you’re going to run into if you travel but make sure to double check before you book anything. “On Jan. 12, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test to all air passengers entering the United States. This requirement will go into effect on Jan. 26, 2021.According to the CDC, air passengers entering the U.S. will be required to present documentation of a negative COVID-19 viral test (called a Qualifying Test) conducted within the 3 days before their flight to the U.S. departs. Documentation should be for a viral test as approved or authorized by the relevant national authority. Test results must state: Negative, SARS-CoV2 RNA Not Detected, SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Not Detected, or COVID-19 Not Detected. Documentation may be paper or electronic copy and must include the name and contact information for the laboratory or healthcare personnel who performed the test. Test results may be required to be shown again upon landing.”

  • Albania-There is a curfew from 10 pm to 6 am nationwide but for delivery services. If coming from Great Britain there is a mandatory 14 day quarantine. Indoor and outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 people. There is a health screening upon arrival but NO COVID test is required for entry. US citizens are not required to quarantine if coming from any other country other than Great Britain.
  • Antigua and Barbuda-All visitors arriving by air must have a negative Covid-19 PCR test result within 7 days of departure from their point of origin. Children under 12 do not need a test to enter. A Health Declaration Form is required and a health screening including temperature check will occur upon arrival. All travelers will be assessed by the Port Health Authorities and will continue to be monitored for up to 14 days. Arriving passengers are asked to register with the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment by providing information here or by calling 1-268-462-2675.
  • Armenia-Gatherings are restricted to 60 people. Facemasks are required in public places. Travelers entering Armenia are asked to present the results of a PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival or submit to a PCR test at the airport. Individuals who choose to take a PCR test and receive a negative result may be exempted from self-quarantine requirements. If you opt to take the test upon arrival you incur the cost and the results typically take 24 hours during which you are quarantined. Individuals exposed to someone testing positive for COVID-19 may be asked to self-monitor or self-quarantine for 14 days following exposure.
  • Aruba-A negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival is required for entry. You are required to have an Immigration card (ED) upon entry and upload your results to that card. If you arrive without test results you will be tested at the airport and quarantined until results come back. There is a curfew in effect from 11 PM to 5 AM.
  • Barbados-Barbados has established a COVID-19 information hotline that can be reached at +1 246-536-4500. All are required to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to arrival. “Persons from High-Risk countries with a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test result will be quarantined at a designated holding hotel or approved villa at their own expense, and will be monitored daily for the onset of symptoms. Beginning January 6, all persons in quarantine will be required to wear an electronic tracking bracelet. Tampering with the electronic monitoring bracelet will send an alarm to Barbados authorities.” The US is classified as a high risk country. People traveling from a high risk country, will need a second COVID test 5 days after the last negative test result was accepted by the Ministry of Health authorities in Barbados.
  • Belarus-No test or quarantine required, although all visitors must go through screenings upon arrival at the Airport.
  • Bermuda-A PCR COVID test must be negative within 72 hours of departure. Children 9 and under are exempt. An online travel authorization form must be completed and fees are incurred. Travelers are now being required to have travel health insurance, and are being asked to pack a thermometer in order to take their temperature twice per day during their stay, and report it on the online form. There is a curfew between 11 PM and 5 Am All residents and visitors are required to wear a traveler wristband the first 14 days of their stay. If you do not have a valid PCR test upon arrival you will be quarantined and required to wear a quarantine bracelet that will cost you as well.
  • Brazil– No Test or quarantine required. Travel Health insurance is required. If you are traveling by air you must present a Travelers Health Declaration and a negative COVID test result no more than 72 hours prior to boarding. Under 2 years old do not need a test and less than 12 and over 2 if accompanied by an adult then a test is also not necessary. Minors unaccompanied 2-12 require a negative test result.
  • Cambodia– E-visa programs have been suspended. Foreign travelers are required to give a $2000 deposit when arriving at the airport, and purchase a LOCAL health insurance package for COVID treatment. You must have a negative COVID test result within 72 hours of arrival in Cambodia. You will also be tested upon arrival at cost to you and a second test will be administered on the 13th day of quarantine. You will be quarantined for 14 days. If any traveler on an arriving flight tests positive, then all passengers will be quarantined for 14 days and re-tested.
  • Chile– All passengers must complete at 10 day quarantine as of Jan 1, 2021. If you take a PCR test on day 7 and receive a negative result you may leave quarantine. A contact tracing app is in development for the country. There is a daily curfew from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am country wide. You must show a negative PCR test within 72 hours of boarding the final flight to Chile as of Jan 7, 2021. Chile requires the 72 hour period to begin when the test is administered, not results received. You must also provide an Affidavit of Travelers form, and proof of travel insurance. They WILL NOT ACCEPT A RAPID TEST AS OF Jan 7, 2021 it must be a PCR.
  • Curacao-Passengers are required to have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure. You are required to have a Digital Immigration Card, the results of your COVID test both on your person via the Passenger Locator Form and digitally. You must also have proof of travel insurance. Cruise passengers are currently still banned.
  • Colombia-No quarantine required. All visitors must provide a negative COVID test 96 hours before boarding their flight, fill out the online migration Check-Mig form between 24 and 1 hour before their flight, and download the CoronAPP and keep monitoring their health after arrival. You will undergo a health screening upon arrival. You are also required to have proof of travel insurance that includes COVID-19 in the policy.
  • Costa Rica-Travel health insurance that covers COVID is required and filling out the health travel form provided. This insurance must be verified by authorities in Costa Rica. “Costa Rican Immigration officials have sole authority to determine the length of stay for tourists entering Costa Rica.  Immigration officials are currently limiting the duration of stay to correspond with coverage dates provided by the COVID-19 medical insurance.  Tourists are not able to extend their stay while in Costa Rica.  Those seeking to extend their stay will be required to exit the country and purchase additional COVID-19 medical insurance prior to reentry. ” You must also fill out a health form 48 hours prior to travel. Negative COVID test is not required. Health screening at the airport with temperatures will occur.
  • Dominican Republic-COVID-19 rapid tests are performed on randomly selected travelers upon arrival. All visitors must undergo a health evaluation upon arrival and complete a Travelers Health Affidavit. Curfew ranges depending on the day of week. If you test positive then you will be quarantined.
  • Dominica-All are required to pass a COVID PCR test between 24 and 72 hours of arrival, fill out an online form and upon arrival will be checked via rapid test. If positive, you will be quarantined.
  • Ecuador-No quarantine as long as there’s a Negative PCR test within 10 days of departure, including minors. If you do not have a PCR test, you will be required to take a rapid test at cost.
  • Egypt-Must have a negative COVID PCR test within 96 hours of departure for North American travelers. The timing must be 96 hours before the original departing flight to the country.
  • French Polynesia-U.S citizens must bring a negative COVID PCR test before boarding the flight within 3 days of departure. They will be tested again 4 days into travel, with no quarantine. There are also helath screenings at the airport upon arrival.
  • Ghana-Must have of a negative PCR test, within 72 hours prior to departure. The test must be taken in the country of origin. Anyone over the age of 5 will be subject to temperature screenings and a nother COVID test upon arrival which you pay for before travel.
  • Grenada-You must have a Pure Safe Travel Certificate to enter. Above the age of 5 you must have a negative PCR test within 3 days of travel. You are quarantined for 4 days and then a second PCR test will be administered. If you pass you may enter the community. That home test will be at cost to you. You also need proof of approved accommodation and utilize the health app for contact tracing that is being created.
  • Guatemala-A negative PCR test is required, taken within 96 hours prior to departure for everyone 10 and over. Before arrival you must complete the online health pass. Upon arriving there are heath screenings to be done in the airport.
  • Haiti-Temperature check and health declaration card. Travelers from specific states must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Those states are designated by the Ministry of Public Health on their website.
  • Honduras-Negative COVID test take within 72 hours prior to arrival. Can be either PCR or a Rapid Test. You also must complete an immigration precheck form which will give you a confirmation email which you will be required to have with you. Health screenings at entry including temperature checks.
  • Ireland-Any traveler arriving to Ireland from the United States is requested to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival and is required to complete a COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form indicating where they will self-isolate.  Failure to complete the form or providing false or misleading information is an offense under Irish law, with a fine of up to €2,500 (nearly $3,000) and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months.
  • Jamaica-A Negative PCR test is required, as well as an online travel authorization card. Visitors to the island are requested to quarantine at their location of arrival (within the resort, not your room) for up to 14 days, depending on type of travel. Business travel is requiring a quarantine until you receive a negative test.
  • Kenya-A negative PCR test is required within 96 hours of departure otherwise a 14 day self quarantine. Health screening is required upon entry. Please be advised that effective January 1, 2021, all passengers are required to apply and obtain an e-visa before boarding an aircraft. Those violating the curfew may be arrested and put in mandatory quarantine for 14 days.
  • Kosovo-Those travelers coming from high risk countries must have a negative RT-PCR test for COVID-19 done in the last 72 hours. Health screenings will occur at the airport. If permitted to enter Kosovo without a negative RT-PCR test taken within the last 72 hours, travelers are required to self-isolate for 7 days. There is a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am in certain high risk cities. There are large fines and even possibly prison time for non-compliance with local mask wearing requirements.
  • Maldives-Negative PCR test within 96 hours of departure. A Traveler Health Declaration is required to be submitted by all travelers within 24 hours prior to arrival. There is a curfew in place for Male city, Hulhulmale, Villimale, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu from 10:00 p.m. until 05:00 a.m. Islands with confirmed COVID-19 patients have been placed under travel lockdown, with arrivals and departures to those islands prohibited.
  • Mexico-No tests or quarantine required, however the risk of infection is increasing. Health screenings and temperature checks at airports. Travelers entering Mexico by land from the United States may be denied admission if the purpose of their visit is considered non-essential.
  • Montenegro-A negative PCR test within 72 hours of arrival OR a positive antibody test of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) class IgG obtained by ELISA. There is a curfew nationwide from 11 pm to 5 am. Health screenings at the airports are required for entry.
  • Nicaragua-A negative PCR test is required 72 hours before arrival. No quarantine. Health screenings are mandatory at the airport upon arrival. Officially, travelers do not need any particular documentation to enter/exit Nicaragua. Unless arriving from a country with known yellow fever risk, then one must demonstrate vaccination against yellow fever at least 10 days prior to entering zone of risk
  • North Macedonia-No test and no quarantine required however you will need to find a way to transit through as Americans still cannot enter the EU.
  • Panama-Negative PCR test is require within 48 hours of arrival, an online health declaration form, and travel insurance. Health checks at the airport are required both upon arrival and on exit.
  • Pakistan-No quarantine. You must submit your contact information on the Pass Track app/site 48 hours before boarding. A Negative PCR test is require within 96 hours of arrival. You will also have to fill out a Health Declaration Form online before landing. All arriving from a Category C country will also take a mandatory RT-PCR test upon arrival in Pakistan. 
  • Paraguay– You must fill out an Online Health Declaration Form before arrival. Negative COVID test within 72 hours of arrival. It can be RNA tests: RT-PCR, NAAT, or NAAT. Minors under 10 are not required to have a test. If you’ve had COVID-19 in the last 14-90 days, you may also enter with documentation and without a current test.
  • Peru-As of Jan 4, mandatory 14 day quarantine has been reinstated. Temp checks upon arrival should also be expected. There is also an online health declaration form required. *Machu Pichu is currently closed due to protests in the area as of December 2020*
  • Puerto Rico– A travel declaration form, negative PCR test within 72 hours of arrival, travel insurance that covers COVID and if you do not have the negative PCR test there will be a mandatory 14 day self quarantine. Strong restrictions within the country still such as curfews, non essential businesses are closed, etc..
  • Rwanda-A negative PCR test within 120 hours of departure and submit those results to lab@rbc.gov.rw, as well as bringing your results to the airport for customs. You will be tested again upon arrival at cost to you of $50, will wait in designated hotels for your results which should come in about 8-24 hours. Certain tourist attractions will also require a test before entering or participating. Travelers departing from Rwanda must test negative for COVID-19 within 120 hours before departure, and are encouraged to book and pay for their tests at least two days prior to departure through the online platform available here.
  • Serbia-A Negative PCR test is required no older than 48 hours. Minors up to 12 are excluded as long as they are with a parent or guardian who has tested negative. As of December 22, the Serbian Government is reporting that passengers whose travel originates in the United States can present either a negative PCR test or negative antigen test.
  • South Africa-A negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure. If you are without your test result there is a mandatory quarantine until you are tested and receive a negative result. Health screening upon arrival and contact tracing through an app.
  • Saint Barthelemy-Negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure. If you arrive with no test you can be tested at cost to you upon arrival with a 24 hour quarantine awaiting results. If you are staying longer than 7 days, you must be retested on your 7th day. Children under 10 do not need testing. You must sign an affidavit saying that you haven’t had symptoms or been in any contact with anyone COVID positive within 14 days of your departure.
  • St. Lucia-complete a Pre-Arrival Travel Registration Form to ensure efficient and expedited processing on arrival. Negative PCR test within 7 days of travel for all travelers over 5 years old, health screen upon arrival. You must have confirmed reservations with COVID certified provider for your stay. You must remain on the property during your stay unless on an excursion arranged by the hotel. Encouragement to stay home between 9 pm and 5 am, but not mandatory.
  • St. Maarten-Travel authorization form must be completed, a negative PCR test within 120 hours of departure from a country labeled high risk, and it is mandatory to track your symptoms for 14 days. Health screenings upon arrival are required
  • St Vincent and the Grenadines-A pre-arrival travel form must be completed, PCR negative test result within 72 hours upon arrival, tested again upon arrival, proof of payment of a Ministry of Tourism approved quarantine hotel for 10 nights and quarantine. Then be retested between the 4th and 7th day, and upon testing negative.
  • Tanzania-Health screening upon entry. If the airline or country or origin require it for travel it must be presentable upon arrival. Tanzania does not require a negative COVID test upon entry.
  • Turkey-PCR tests are required for entry for everyone 6 years and older within 72 hours of departure. Results must be submitted to the airline at time of check in. Health screenings are also required upon arrival, and a health form filled out upon arrival.
  • Turks and Caicos-Must fill out a TCI Assured travel authorization form and uploading the required documents to the portal. When all is completed you acquire a sticker that you can use to enter the country. Negative PCR test is required within 5 days of travel. Must have travel insurance that covers COVID, medivac, etc.. and must complete a health screening questionnaire. There is also health screening upon arrival.
  • United Arab Emirates– Register a health declaration, have a negative PCR test within 96 hours of boarding, and children under 12 are exempt. Travel health insurance is required, and temp checks upon arrival. Travelers arriving into Abu Dhabi are required to wear a GPS bracelet for 10 days. The UAE government is testing many airline passengers on arrival and some passengers may need to self-quarantine at home or sent to a quarantine facility, at their own expense.
  • Uganda-Requirement of a PCR negative within 120 hours of arrival. Those test results need to be presented to the airline to confirm your booking. A negative PCR COVID-19 test taken not more than 120 hours before departure. Health screenings are done upon arrival. There is a nationwide curfew between 9 pm and 6 am.
  • Ukraine-U.S. citizens arriving from a Red Zone country are required to enter into self-quarantine or take a COVID-19 test upon arrival at international airports in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv. Test results are emailed within 24 hours, and passengers should follow the self-quarantine protocol until the results are communicated to the Public Health Center. U.S. citizens will not be required to self-quarantine or take a COVID-19 test upon arrival if they take a PCR test 48 hours prior to traveling to Ukraine and the result is negative. You are also required to have medical travel insurance covering COVID and proof of such insurance.
  • Zambia-Negative PCR test within 14 days of departure. Many airlines are still requiring within 72 hours so keep that in mind. Entry will be denied without this test. Possible retesting upon arrival. Tourists are asked to monitor themselves for symptoms during their stay.
