Pick-pocketing is a fear that people have when traveling whether domestically and even more so internationally. I’ve seen time and time again people make mistakes when it comes to their valuables and traveling. In order to help you NOT make those mistakes, I’ve compiled a list of things you can do to prevent pick-pocketing and becoming a victim or a statistic.

First things first, take some precautions before you go anywhere
If you get in trouble even if you take the following tips, these will help you in the meantime. Make copies of your passport, credit and debit cards, visa, bank account info, and any other important documents either with you on paper or electronically. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a friend at home have those copies as well, just in case.
My number 1 tip I give to everyone is keep your cash and cards in separate places
I separate my money and documents in my luggage, carry on, my purse, and in my pockets. That way if something gets taken or compromised, the criminals don’t get to walk away with everything.
Be Aware
Big crowds are the worst place to be for pick-pocketing. While in the middle of a big crowd, keep your wits about you if you will. The best way to stave off a pick-pocket is to have your eyes wide open and not let your guard down. Markets, big events, train stations, airports are the biggest perpetrators.
Keep your cards in an RFID blocking sleeve or wallet
Skimming is an enormous industry world wide. It’s caused harm to millions of people. There’s some discrepancy on whether or not the RFID blockers are fool proof, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to give it a go. The theory is that if you put all of your cards in the sleeve, then the scanners can’t pick up your financial information off of your cards. Better be safe than sorry right? I like these options below:
Don’t carry extra with you. If you don’t NEED it, leave it in the room
There’s really no need for a big bag and a sweater and your big camera and a different top and a snack and ….. Bring your phone, your money, and a pair of sunnies. Maybe the sweater too, just in case it gets chilly. The more you have on you, the more they have to steal and/or leave behind on accident.
I hope these tips help you while you travel, and prevent pick-pocketing from ruining your vacation that you spent time, energy and money on.
